How to use the legal research checklist
Work through it in order and record each source in the Authority Log.
First, read your court’s rules so you know what the finished document must contain. Next, fill in your own information. Then compare the result with the rules one more time before you file or serve anything.
Check your court’s rules first
Courts set their own formatting and filing rules. For example, they may set margins, font size, line spacing and page limits. Also, many courts publish their own mandatory forms, and you must use those where they exist. Federal rules are available from the federal judiciary. For state courts, start with our state procedures guide.
